Career

Robert John Carr (born 28 September 1947) is an Australian retired politician and journalist who served as the 39th Premier of New South Wales from 1995 to 2005. He was a member of the Australian Labor Party (ALP) and held the New South Wales Legislative Assembly seat of Maroubra from 1983 to 2005.

Personal life

Carr was born in Matraville, New South Wales. He was educated at Marist College Kogarah and the University of Sydney, where he studied law. He married Helena Carr in 1976. They have two children.

Legacy

Carr is remembered as a successful and popular premier. He is credited with leading the ALP to victory in four state elections and overseeing a period of economic growth and social reform. He is also remembered for his role in the establishment of the National Sorry Day and the Uluru Statement from the Heart.
