Italian Boxer Angela Carini Came To The Paris Olympics Aiming To Win A Medal But Her Dreams Were Shattered Just 46 Seconds Into Her First Fight

Paris Olympics: Boxer tearfully quits fight after punch by ineligible opponent

Italian boxer Angela Carini came to the Paris Olympics aiming to win a medal, but her dreams were shattered just 46 seconds into her first fight.

Carini was facing Imane Khelif of Algeria in the round of 16 of the women's welterweight competition when she was caught by a punch that left her in tears. Carini immediately turned her back on the fight and walked out of the ring, leaving the referee no choice but to stop the contest.

It later emerged that Khelif had failed a gender eligibility test and should not have been allowed to compete in the women's event. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has since apologized to Carini and said that it is investigating how Khelif was able to pass the gender test.

Carini's withdrawal from the Olympics is a major blow to her hopes of winning a medal, but she has vowed to come back stronger. "I'm disappointed, but I'm not giving up," Carini said. "I'm going to use this experience to motivate me and I'll be back to win a medal in the next Olympics."
